The bob haircut is cultural icon dating back in its modern form to the 1920s and 30s and constantly revived and reinvented by successive generations. In this online hairdressing course Stacey Broughton and Tracey Hughes present five bob hairstyles incorporating the shape in just a few of its many potential incarnations. Each lesson presents a different interpretation, suitable for different hair types and lengths, face shapes and clients’ style and suitability. Stacey Broughton is the former Senior Art Director of Vidal Sassoon and is widely recognized as one of the greatest hair cutters working today. Tracey Hughes has won Australian Educator of the Year four times, and the Excellence in Education award four times. She also counts Australian Hairdressing awards for Hairdresser of the Year, Colourist of the Year, Salon of the Year and the Honoree Australian Masters. On completion you can download, print and share a CPD Certificate of Recognition endorsed by VTCT and ITEC.

One Length Bob

40 minutesInstructor: Stacey Broughton

Stacey Broughton teaches you how to do a one length bob haircut, cut with tension. This is a fundamental and always popular salon hairstyle and the perfect starting point for mastering the bob shape. The final result is a balanced one-length defined shape, tailored for the client and cut with discipline and precision.

Box Bob

37 minutesInstructor: Stacey Broughton

Stacey Broughton’s second tutorial demonstrates a timeless, classic box bob haircut. Stacey demonstrates the positioning of line above the hairline, the blend from the guide into the hairline and continuation of line from front to back and the placement and length of the fringe. The result is a beautiful face framing bob above the jawline that never goes out of fashion.

Long A-line Bob Shape

34 minutesInstructor: Stacey Broughton

In lesson 3 Stacey Broughton teaches you to cut a variation of a long A-line shape bob. Starting by graduating the internal area, Stacey then cuts a soft pointed outline. This video tutorial teaches graduation, over-direction and the importance of finger and body positioning in the placement of the perimeter line. Stacey then demonstrates freehand techniques to soften and loosen this contemporary and youthful salon friendly shape.

Graduated A-line Disconnection with a Heavy Fringe

37 minutesInstructor: Tracey Hughes

For lesson 4 Tracey Hughes demonstrates a variation that incorporates graduation, over-direction, disconnection and the placement of a heavy fringe. The final look is a commercial salon shape combining a multitude of forms and complex technique. The end result is a beautifully slim elongated A-line with natural movement and a refined but loose and relaxed outline.

Horizontal graduated bob on permed hair

34 minutes

Stacey Broughton's final lesson in this course is a horizontal graduated bob on permed hair, demonstrating the versatility of the shape for all types of hair texture. Prior to the cut the hair has been permed, which allows you to assess the texture fully when working this very simple horizontal graduated technique. The key to this shape is the definition of the elevation, with the texture from the firmer curl supporting the looser finger wave movement through the top area. This is elevated and over-directed down to achieve a graceful, graduated silhouette. The final result is a luxurious curly bob shape that is pure in form but simple and natural.
