Summer is the ideal time for flowing bouncy curls and beachy waves. Clients cannot get a enough of curly hairstyles this season and we have five top techniques for achieving your most requested looks.
The curly blow out
The chic curly blow out is a fantastic way for adding glamorous waves and curls for a polished bouncy look. Product choice is key and this must be led by the characteristics of your clients hair. There is no one choice suits all when it comes to blow drying hair. Naturally curly haired beauties are going to require your best smoothing product whist your finer haired beauties are going to require a hair product with super hold.
Once you have your product applied blast the hair to remove moisture before you commence using your technique. A good rule of thumb is blast the hair until it is 80% dry, however; you must trust your instincts. Some naturally curly hair types may require a little more moisture to achieve the tension required for your desired result.
Blow dry the hair in sections the width and depth of your round brush. Start by lifting at the root area and then work down the mid-lengths and ends. Ensure your dryer airflow follows the direction of the cuticle. The key to the curly blow out is ensuring your round brush is turning and creating tension as your dry each section. Once the hair is warm to touch and all the moisture has been removed from the section, wrap the section in your round brush, hold for a few seconds, then remove and wrap the section back up to the scalp and secure with a sectioning clip.
Continue to blow-dry the remainder of the sections, securing each one with a sectioning clip before moving onto the next. Once you complete allow the hair to cool completely before removing and styling.
Hollywood Curls
Hollywood Curls are the perfect summer curly hairstyle for bridal parties or formal occasions. This look can be achieved on wet hair with classic setting rollers or on dry hair with heated rollers or tongs.
On freshly washed hair apply the best product for your client’s hair characteristics. Once your product is applied part your client’s hair in a side parting from the top of the head to just behind the ears. Place your rollers in the front two sections from the parting down to the hairline on a slight angle. Each section should be the depth and width or your roller or curling tong. Ensure the sections are lifted to create your desired root lift and maintain effective tension throughout the process.
Work the sections through the back vertically to enhance a dropped curl look. Working the sections vertically is also a fantastic way of eliminating sectioning marks.
Uber Curls
Uber curls for summer is all about getting maximum bounce, volume and definition. A classic brick wind set performed with setting rollers or a curling wand is the ideal way to achieve uber curly hairstyles.
The smaller the roller or diameter of the curly wand used will increase the uber curl result! A brick wind set is ideal for preventing harsh partings in the hair and this traditional setting placement creates cascading curls that ooze elegance and extravagance.
Bobs with curls
Sometimes your clients want to up the anti from a classic wavy bob for an extra special summer event. A curvature volume set is the perfect way to enhance a bob shaped hairstyle. Performed on wet hair with traditional setting rollers or on dry hair with heated rollers, the curvature volume set allows you provide ultimate movement into a bob shape without adding extra width.
It’s best to use large rollers and work the front sections towards the face. This will allow you to enhance curl in a bob hairstyle without creating width around the face and jaw.
Vintage Curls
Vintage curls never go out of fashion. They can add dynamics to modern formal attire and charm to vintage inspired looks. The key to this trend is to approach it with traditional wet setting techniques.
Classic finger waving and pin curling provide the perfect base for chic vintage curls. To enhance the deep side parting of a vintage curl look, divide the top section and place into a finger wave. Then comb the longer lengths into pin curls and secure flatly to the scalp.
Continue this process until the whole head is set in pin curls. Varying the direction of the curls helps to add dimension to the final look.
Once the hair is dried, use traditional comb out techniques to add shine and to manipulate the hair into your desired look.
